What Is Squirrel Cage Rotor in Induction Motor

Electric motors convert electrical energy into mechanical energy and are widely used across modern industries. Featuring simple structures and convenient operation, they come in many types and can adapt to nearly all working scenarios. Continue reading to find out what a squirrel cage rotor is, its operating principles and typical application scenarios.

What is a squirrel cage rotor

Squirrel cage rotors are core components of squirrel cage induction motors, relying on electromagnetic effects to generate rotation. The component gets its name because its physical structure resembles a squirrel cage. It consists of two circular end rings connected by rotor bars. When the stator (a laminated metal frame fitted with windings) generates an electromagnetic field, the rotor bars will interact with this magnetic field.

Stators and rotors are the two fundamental parts of all induction motors. The squirrel cage rotor is a special rotor design that utilises electromagnetic induction. Alternating current flowing through the stator creates a rotating magnetic field that cycles with AC frequency. This rotating magnetic field cuts the rotor bars and induces magnetic force inside the rotor, driving rotation.

How the squirrel cage rotor works

The working principle of the squirrel cage rotor follows the basic theory of induction motors. The main distinction lies in the magnetic interaction between its rotor bars and the stator. The stator windings are supplied with alternating sinusoidal current, which constantly changes direction.

As the alternating current oscillates, it generates a rotating electromagnetic field. This rotating magnetic field induces opposing electromotive force and magnetic fields within the squirrel cage rotor bars. The interaction between magnetic fields produces torque and spins the rotor.

Classification of squirrel cage motors by rotor design

Class A squirrel cage motors are the most common variant. They deliver standard starting torque and starting current, with slip below 5% of synchronous speed. Typical uses include fans, compressors and conveyors, or other low-inertia loads that require rapid motor acceleration.

Class B squirrel cage motors can start under full load, suitable for high-inertia equipment such as large fans and centrifugal pumps. They provide normal starting torque, lower starting current than Class A motors, and full-load slip less than 5%. Class B motors can sometimes replace Class A motors when reduced starting current is needed.

Class C squirrel cage motors feature high starting torque and low starting current. This performance advantage makes them more costly than Class A and Class B types. They are selected for equipment demanding high starting torque, like load pumps, compressors and crushers. Their full-load slip is generally under 5%.

Class D squirrel cage motors have the highest starting torque and low starting current, with a high full-load slip ranging from 5% to 20% depending on use cases. They are widely applied in bulldozers, foundry machinery and punch presses.

Applications and selection guide

Squirrel cage induction motors equipped with squirrel cage rotors are a mainstream industrial option. Their advantages include low cost, minimal maintenance, high efficiency, stable heat dissipation and reliable operation. The main limitation is poor inherent speed regulation performance, which is why wound rotor motors were developed for variable-speed needs. NEMA standards simplify motor selection; users only need to confirm the operating parameters of the project.

For example, a forging factory building a new power hammer that needs powerful rapid impact should choose Class D motors for their ultra-high starting torque. For ordinary HVAC fans, Class A or Class B motors are ideal. Confirm the torque, speed and voltage requirements of your working condition, and you can find a matching squirrel cage motor with suitable squirrel cage rotor.
